(SULTAN, WA.) – Sultan’s annual three-day big explosaganza Summer celebration called Shindig starts Friday July 13 and runs through Sunday July 15.

The celebration, which includes a street fair, carnival, logging demonstrations (ax throwing, spar-pole climbing) and live music pays homage to the community's rich logging history.

“Rich” meaning a few logging companies owned by robber barons back east got filthy rich while the loggers themselves ended up with fingers, hands and feet missing and the proverbial poopy end of the stick (as has always been the case).

This year at Shindig there is something really exciting. They’re bringing back for your dining and dancing pleasure our favorite event: bare knuckle logger fist fights on Main Street at high noon.

You don't wanna miss these bad boys. The fights are the 1800’s version and precursors to today’s Mixed Martial Arts fights (MMA bouts) that you see on the electric tee-vee and Pay Per View events.

Damn but they’re fun to watch. In each bout two big, burly drunken loggers go at it with fists, hand axes, rocks, chains and bad intentions – just like the old days when one would claim the other had been messin’ with his woman or had got his daughter in “the family way.”

The bouts are three minutes long and there are 10 bouts in all. The guy still standing (or alive) at the end of each bout (and who has been able to stop the bleeding, more or less) wins a free dinner at the local burger joint plus bragging rights.

Did we mention there ls also a carnival, food and crafts?

And we sure hope they have the dueling logger chainsaw competition this year (like you see in the video below) as that’s our second personal favorite thing to watch. The one in the Chronicle-shot video took place Sunday July 12, 2009 at the Shindig and by God it was a hoot n’ holler.

All the Shindig action takes place at the west end of Main Street. You’ll see all of it unfold as you drive down US Highway 2 (road to Stevens Pass) from the east end of the lovely Sultan Bridge which spans the equally lovely Sultan River.

And if you cannot see it from there, then you’re either stoned and/or pretty blind and in either event you should not be driving a car on the opens roads of this fine state.

At any rate, be there or be square dudettes.

Just kidding about them bringing back the logger bare knuckle fist fights. They passed a law some law years ago that says you can’t do that stuff anymore.
