(KITTITAS, WA.) -- The Washington State Patrol says an elderly Sultan woman was killed and another Sultan resident was injured in a four-vehicle pileup in central Washington.
The accident occurred Thursday morning August 24 at about 10:42 am in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90, just 10 miles west of the tiny hamlet of Kittitas, Washington located in Kittitas County.
The patrol report says all of the vehicles were headed eastbound in lane one of I-90 when a blue 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck slowed for stopping traffic. (See photos upper right)
The slowdown was caused by heavy smoke in the area from a fire in the median of the highway. A white 2016 Freightliner commercial semi-truck then crashed into the rear of the Dodge pickup.
A black 2011 Ford F-150 pickup truck towing a trailer then struck the rear of the Freightliner, causing the Ford pickup to jack-knife which was then hit by a gray 2008 Subaru Tribeca.
The patrol report says killed in the accident was a 93-year old woman from Sultan, WA identified as Grace E. Bronn a passenger in the Ford pickup, which was totaled in the accident.
Injured was the driver of the pickup truck, also a Sultan resident, identified as 61-year old Christie A. Merrick. Merrick was transported to a local hospital.
The driver of the Dodge Ram truck, a 58-year old Brewster, Washington man was not injured nor was the driver of the freightliner, a 59-year old Athens, Georgia man.
Also not injured was the driver of the Subaru, a 21-year old Montesano, Washington man. Not injured was a passenger in the Dodge pickup, a 57-year old woman from Brewster, Washington.
