(SULTAN, WA) -- Get your walkin' and boogie shoes out for a veritable spasm of good times for it is the summer season of community festivals here in the lovely Sky Valley where all the women are strong and pump iron and all the men are movie star pretty.
SULTAN SHINDIG: The annual Sultan Shindig festival kicks things off this weekend, Fri-Sunday July 8-10 in lovely downtown Sultan just a stone's throw from the historic Sultan river which meanders and flows at whatever rate it chooses to its junction with the mighty and untamed Skykomish River right under the Sultan Bridge.
The town is a scant six miles east of Monroe. Look to your left as you cross the Sultan River Bridge driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 2 and you won't miss it.
As always, this family friendly event is a swell time for all (most people anyway) with plenty of small town charm down there at River Park at the west end of Main Street.
There's carny rides, carny food (yum), crafts, live music, a midway, a street fair, a grand parade as well as a cool classic & custom car show (vroom vroom!) which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, July 10 and there's a motorcycle show from 12-3 p.m., Saturday, July 9.
And along with the ever popular Logging Contest is our favorite event, a logger's bare knuckle fist fight on Saturday night right on Main Street. Yeah. Real life kickin' and a gougin' in the mud n' the blood n' the beer, just like those MMA fights on TV.
Just kidding. Wanted to see if you folks were paying attention.
GOLD BAR'S GOLD DUST DAYS: Next up on the summer festival list is Gold Dust Days in Gold Bar, just down the road from Sultan. Takes place Fri. July 22nd through Sunday July 24.
Here you can experience real gold panning, a Civil War encampment, live music, handcrafted items for sale, a parade, car show and lots of free fun events for kids including a bike decorating session, followed by a bike parade, bouncy house, gunny sack races against the firefighters, and a theatrical performance by the Red Hat Ladies.
The Gold Dust Days Heritage Festival pays tribute to the rich western history of Gold Bar which included loggers, miners, gold panners, claim jumpers, patent medicine salesmen, river boat runners, gamblers, country sawbones (doctors), the odd soiled dove and a few gunslingers along with thieves, highwaymen and other assorted scoundrels.
ARLINGTON FLY IN: And although not part of the Sky Valley festivals, The Arlington Fly In takes place this week (Thurs. July 7 through Sat. July 9) and it's always a good time family event. No cussing allowed. And no gangstuh music. And sit up straight.
It's billed as "The West Coast Premier Recreation Aviation Event" and by God it is as far as we're concerned.
You got your air shows every day, airplane rides, the runway theater, kids day and more. Check it all out here .
More later (dudes).
