SULTAN WOMAN WHO’S HORSES WERE TAKEN AWAY, CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY
November 03, 2009

(SULTAN, WA) -- Snohomish County animal control officers and Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant September 9th at a horse farm on Trout Farm Road in Sultan and took away a number of horses they alleged were being abused through substandard care.

Removed from the 2-acre property in the 12900 block of Trout Farm Road were 10 thoroughbreds including mares, foals, fillies and one stallion.

The 38-year old woman who runs the farm, Mary Peterson was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree animal cruelty.

Peterson has now been charged with five counts of first-degree animal cruelty through alleged neglect of at least 10 of the horses that were under her care.

Officials said the horses suffered from a variety of ailments ranging from skin infections to inadequate nutrition and other problems.

Animal control officials were first notified of problems at the farm back in July by a neighbor. Officers who went to the farm to investigate the complaint ended up removing a mare that had difficulty even walking.

The horse was later put down after veterinarians determined the mare’s chronic health problems were too far gone.

Animal control officials had been trying to work with Peterson in an effort to help her bring care and feeding of the animals up to an appropriate and legal level of care, but the decision was made to rescue the animals in early September after no improvement in care was observed and the horses’ health seemed to be getting worse.
