SULTAN TO HOLD HEARING ON 20% FEE INCREASE IN GARBAGE RATES
December 10, 2008
SULTAN,WA) -- The Sultan City Council will hold a public hearing on proposed garbage fee increases tomorrow night, Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sultan Council Chambers. The location is 319 Main Street in Sultan.
City officials claim the hefty 20% proposed fee increase is necessary to pay for increasing labor, fuel and operating costs to support the garbage utility that under state law must pay for itself.
Garbage collection fees have been unchanged since 2004. The Council is scheduled to take action on the proposed fee increase January 8, 2009 and January 22, 2009. The new fees would go into effect February 1, 2009 and would remain in effect until Sultan completes a garbage rate study later in the year.
The cost for garbage service for a customer who gas only one garbage can picked up per week would be increased by $3.10 from $15.50 per month to $18.60 per month. The senior citizen rate would remain unchanged. Recycling and yard waste service would increase by $1.00 from $3.50 per month to $4.50 per month. Commercial customers and temporary dumpster rentals will also increase by 20%.
The city says the cost to purchase dumpsters has doubled since 2004 and Allied Waste, the company that supplies the recycling service to the city, has increased Sultan’s recycling rates to the City by 20% effective January 2009.
Snohomish County Solid Waste notified sultan that the dump fees paid by the city would increase by approximately 20% per ton from $89.00 per ton to $105 per on effective January 2009.
