GLACIER PEAK GRIZZLIES PULL OFF STUNNING WIN TO BECOME DISTRICT CHAMPS
Will advance
to state tourney

March 04, 2010

(SNOHOMISH, WA) -- It’s not supposed to happen. A young, scruffy second year high school with its very first class of seniors set to graduate this year, winning the district championship to advance to the state basketball tournament?

That’s a Hollywood movie script sort of thing.

But it did happen Wednesday in front of a home court crowd of cheering, stomping Grizzly fans. Snohomish’s Glacier Peak High School’s boys basketball team made school and state history by rallying in the second half of the game with a full court press to beat the Meadowdale Mavericks 55-50 and win the district championship.

The win marked Glacier Peak’s first district basketball title and first state berth.

Wins don’t get much sweeter than that.

The Grizzlies are now the district’s No. 1 seed for the state 3A-state tournament, which starts Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome.

The Grizzlies turned on the turbo-charger midway through the third quarter. Grizzly senior guard Brandon Hill led the charge with 25 points (18 in the third quarter alone) to move from four points behind in the game to 3 points ahead, along with Payton Perier’s (6 ft 11 inch Jr. center) 10 points and swingman Tanner Southard’s 11 points.

Anyway you cut it, it was a great win and a stunning victory for Glacier Peak (19-5).

It was the fourth time the two teams had met this season with Meadowdale winning the first two games. Glacier Peak won the third game 49-47 on February 18th in Lynnwood in a district seeding game.

Meadowdale can still advance to state. The Mavericks will play Shorecrest in a winner-to-state, loser-out second-place game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Glacier Peak High.
