ACCIDENT ON HY 522 INJURES SNOHOMISH WOMAN, 2 CHILDREN
February 09, 2010

(SNOHOMISH, WA) -- The state patrol says a Snohomish woman and two children were injured when the car they were riding in was slammed into from the rear Monday afternoon on Highway 522 by a large dump truck.

The patrol says a 1994 Ford T-Bird driven by 28-year old Sandra H. Pena Medina was stopped in lane one, eastbound on Highway 522 and the junction with State Route 9 in Snohomish at 3:19 p.m. Monday when her vehicle was struck from behind by a 2001 Kenworth dump truck.

The Ford T-Bird was totaled and Pena-Medina was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment, as were two children who were passengers in the car.

Also injured and taken to the hospital were 6-year old Edgar Pena Arias and 8-year old Kasandra Arias.

The driver of the Kenworth truck, 49-year old Michael Turner of Monroe was not injured.

A state patrol spokesman says the cause of the accident is under investigation and charges are pending.

State route 522 has long been one of the most dangerous stretches of road in Washingtonstate. Over one 15-year period some 1,780 accidents, 1,359 injuries, and 47 deaths resulted in the highway being included in the September 1995 Reader's Digest article "America's Most Dangerous Highways." The highway has also been featured in a Dateline NBC story and a 2007 Forbes Magazine article for similar reasons.
