WRITER FINDS MONROE TAKING WALMART MONEY TROUBLING
April 27, 2011
In March, Walmart donated, and the City accepted, a $1,000 donation.
Writer claims city of Monroe took money from Walmart in middle of civic battle over the world's largest retailer.
This was before the City Council made a final decision on if, and how, Monroe would accept Walmart’s plans for building a new superstore within the city limits.
I know this donation was legal, I doubt it was an ethics violation, but I am CERTAIN that the timing is troubling.
Given the high level of public interest and divisiveness in this issue, common sense dictates that even the appearance of a conflict of interest would be avoided.
Are we in such dire financial straits that $1,000 (for flowerpots) is worth the possibility of more public questions abut ethics?
We urge the City Council, the Mayor and Walmart to treat the citizens of Monroe with more respect
