MATH & READING SKILLS PLUMMET AT MONROE SCHOOLS

(MONROE, WA) -- Monroe School District (MSD) state math test scores for eighth-grade came in dead last amongst the 13 Snohomish County school districts! MSD also came in third from the last in Reading!

While the Monroe School Board sings the praises of how “Good” our schools are improving and the strong foundation they are building, last year MSD eighth-graders scored 41.2% in Math, compared to the state average of 55.5%.

These students were actually doing better as forth-graders, scoring 54.1% compared to the state average of 53.6%. In four years these students declined 12.9% or dropped 24% in state Math scores since being in forth-grade!

For reading, last year MSD eighth-graders scored 60.6%, compared to the state average of 67.3%; again these students were actually doing better as fourth-graders, scoring 70% compared to the state average of 72.6%. In four years these students declined 9.4% or dropped 14% in state Reading scores since being in forth-grade!

The fourth-grade state test result from 2007/08 represents the strength of building a five-year foundation, which for Monroe was barely above the state average in Math, and below the state average in Reading.

Now, after nine years of building a foundation, these eighth-grade students scores have declined even further behind by an additional 24% in Math and 9% in Reading.

This data does not equate to strong foundation being built, in fact it points to a continual ailing and weaken foundation.

Almost 40% of MSD eighth-graders are unable to pass the state reading test! That’s four out of ten students who could not pass the state reading achievement test!

Almost 60% of MSD eighth-graders are unable to pass the state math test. That’s six out of ten students who could not pass the state math achievement test!

Coming in dead last on Math and third to last on Reading in the county is unacceptable, and should not be dismissed by our elected school board.

A strong foundation can be built, but only once the district commits to providing the necessary time to devote to teaching the core subjects and retaining student when they continue to struggle.
