National Night Out has been held every year in America since 1984. It was introduced in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Matt Peskin, founder and executive director of National Association of Town Watch.
The event began simply with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their homes as a symbol to criminals that communities were “taking back the night.”
It has developed over the years into a community-police awareness-raising event that is held in most states the first Tuesday of August.
