(MONROE, WA) -- The new 22,000 square foot Goodwill retail store in Monroe has its grand opening set for April 15.

The new store has been under construction for several months at 14751 Chain Lake Rd. SE, kiddy corner from Lowe’s Home Center in the North Kelsey shopping district.

As part of the opening of the new store, Goodwill’s Donation Center at 18805 State Route 2 will close on March 12 and re-open at the site of the new retail store.

The hours at the Highway 2 location (Monday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) will remain the same until the new store opens.

On April 15, the store will officially welcome the public with a Grand Opening Celebration, with free drawings, refreshments, and more.

“We wanted to establish our presence at the site as soon as possible so people will know we’re here and that we’ll be opening a new store. We also think this location (the new retail store) for a Donation Center will be more convenient for area residents to drop off their quality reusable items,” said Pete Gantala, the store’s Manager.

Officials from Goodwill held a hiring event in Monroe Feb. 25, The event was such as success that a 2nd planned event was cancelled.

Almost a hundred applicants showed up and of that pool 55 people were hired, which filled the staffing needs of the new store.

Betsy McFeely, spokeswoman for Seattle Goodwill, said the job fair was extremely successful, adding that stories about the event in the Sky Valley Chronicle likely helped spur the large turnout of applicants.

The Chronicle was the only Sky Valley news source providing 24/7 timely information of the hiring event.

Once open in Monroe the new retail outlet will be Goodwill’s 20th outlet in the region and the 5th store in Snohomish County. It is also Monroe’s first “jumbo-sized” modern thrift store.
