(MALTBY, WA.) – The Washington State Patrol says a Monroe woman died in what appeared to be a tragic accident Tuesday night when she stepped out onto a busy highway in Snohomish County and was hit and killed by a sport utility vehicle.

The accident happened about 10:30 pm on State Route 22 at the junction with Echo Lake Road.

The patrol report says 51-year old Alicia B. Chavez had “exited a vehicle that was parked on the westbound shoulder of SR 522” and crossed both lanes of travel on the busy highway in an effort to “retrieve lost belongings” when she was struck and killed by a 2018 Audi Q7 SUV that was traveling down the highway.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 34-year old Ibrahim M. Nasirahmed also of Monroe was not injured nor were three passengers in the SUV, a 38-year old Bothell woman, a 22-year old Monroe woman and a 1-year old boy.

The WSP says the accident is under investigation.
