MONROE’S PLANNED PARENTHOOD OFFICE TO CLOSE
March 20, 2009
(MONROE, WA) -- Another victim of the troubled region and national economy is the nonprofit Monroe Planned Parenthood health center. It will close on March 31st.
Planned Parenthood officials say the Monroe center, one of four in the county has been operating at a loss and in the current economic climate the group can longer justify funding the center’s operation.
The center provides clients with birth control and emergency contraception as well as screening for cervical and testicular cancer, abortions and sexually transmitted disease treatment.
Traditionally Planned Parenthood is where people gravitate to in order to obtain birth control, exams and accurate information about contraception when they cannot afford to go elsewhere.
Sea Mar, another community health center, opened in Monroe in October and Planned Parenthood officials felt they could close their Monroe center and still leave an alternative for patients.
Sea Mar offers many but not all of the same services as Planned Parenthood. For example Sea Mar does not offer abortion services in Monroe.
