MONROE WOMAN KILLED AND 2 OTHERS INJURED
In accident on SR 522 in Monroe

November 04, 2010

(MONROE, WA) -- One person was killed and two others were injured in a bad accident Thursday afternoon on State Route 522 in Monroe, just south of U.S. Highway 2, according to the Monroe Police Department.

The incident happened just before 2:00 p.m. when a 1994 Honda Civic was headed eastbound on SR 522 just south of U.S. Highway 2 in Monroe and for reasons not yet known crossed the centerline of the pavement into the westbound lane and smashed into a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The force of the impact totaled both vehicles.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 20-year old Estela Carmona Gijon of Monroe was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gijon’s 2-year old son, who was a rear passenger in his mother’s car, was airlifted to Harborview Hospital in Seattle with multiple injuries.

The driver of the Ford F-150, identified as 50-year old Steven Forbes of Arlington was taken first to Valley General Hospital in Monroe and was then transported to Harborview in Seattle.

Conditions on the roadway were clear and dry at the time of the crash and Monroe Police say drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the accident.

SR 522 was closed for about 3.5 hours while the collision was under investigation by the Monroe Police Dep’t with assistance from the Washington State Patrol. WSP detectives used their total station in combination with "photo grammatry" to diagram the scene.
