EVERGREEN SPEEDWAY MOVES AHEAD WITH 2009 RACING SEASON
March 14, 2009
(EVERETT, WA) -- Johnson Productions LLC, the company that holds the motor sports operation contract at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe has delivered proof of funding to operate the speedway for the 2009 season by delivering a letter of credit Friday to Snohomish County.
Johnson Productions LLC owes Snohomish County about $32,000 from the 2008 racing season and is behind in some payments to some vendors and the State of Washington. The company also provided the county with an updated insurance certificate covering racing activities at the speedway..
A county spokesperson said the letter of credit allows the county to move forward with the 2009 racing season at the speedway. The first practice session of the year was scheduled for 1:00 p.m. yesterday.
The bulk of the money owed to the county by Lex and Danni Johnson, husband-and-wife owners of Johnson Productions LLC, is some $28,000 from a missed lease payment in the fourth quarter of October 2008.
The rest is for back rent on office space leased from the county. County officials are in talks with Johnson Productions LLC on the 2008 money that is owed. Johnson Productions LLC assumed the speedway's management contract last June, and the county lease along with it, from longtime contract holder International Productions Inc.
Two touring motor sports events, the ASA Northwest Late Model Tour and Northwest Legends will open their respective seasons on March 28th at the Evergreen Speedway. The local racing season which consists of the speedway's five divisions (both oval and figure-eight racers) is scheduled to start April 11th. A demolition derby and fireworks show is slated for April 4th.
Snohomish County's motor sports operations contract for the Evergreen Speedway runs through 2009. The county is scheduled to begin the process later this year that would put the contract up for bid by other interested parties.
