SULTAN DISTRICT CALENDAR. CLICK TO ENLARGE
(MONROE, WA) -- Tomorrow, Wednesday Sept. 8, is the first day of the 2010-2011 school year for kids in the Snohomish, Monroe and Sultan districts here in the Sky Valley.

Also starting September 8th are the Arlington, Everett, Granite Falls (grades 1 through 9), Lake Stevens and Oak Harbor school districts.

Thursday the Stanwood-Camano district opens the school year, as does Granite Falls high school.

Kids in the Index district got a jump start on the week and the year as their classes begin today, Tuesday Sept 7th.

Classes start at 8:00 am in Index with breakfast served (at a cost) from 7:45 am through 8:00 am.

District officials say the free and reduced charge breakfast forms arrived too late to be included in parent packets so they are available at the school office.

Some backpack donations for students have arrived at Index and if parents would like one for their child let school officials know today, the first day of school.

MONROE SCHOOL DISTRICT

Wednesday, September 8 is the first day of school for grades K-6 and 9. This staggered start schedule allows the incoming kindergarten, 6th and 9th graders a day to become acquainted with their new schools.

Kindergarteners will attend an orientation with their families and should have received an invitation with a special time to arrive at school. Students in grade 1-6 and 9 will attend all day. All students, K-12, attend on Thursday, September 9.

New ethnicity/race data reporting takes effect. Changes in federal and state laws require families to verify their child's ethnicity/race this year.

The law requires schools to have ethnicity/race each student, which differs from the past, when a "not provided" option existed.

Each family will receive an email alerting them to the new requirement and steps to verify the data. Families without email addresses on record will receive a letter in the U.S. mail.

The new laws offer 57 options for families to select. If families do not provide this data then the law requires schools to select a category. Monroe school staff will not "observe" students for this selection.

For families not responding, Monroe's selection will simply default to "Non Hispanic/Latino" and "White". The district’s communication office can help with questions.

BEWARE OF NEW ROBOT OVER-THE- SPEED-LIMIT “TICKETING MACHINE” AROUND MONROE SCHOOLS THIS YEAR

Some of you may not be aware that the Monroe Police Department is kicking into gear on Sept. 8 a new robot “speed camera” device that will catch speeding drivers without them being the least bit aware they’ve been clocked and had.

The object of the new technology – which is hosed in an unmarked, ordinary looking white SUV – is to make kids and school staffers safer by getting drivers to slow it down to the speed limit in school zones.

To find out everything there is to know about the new technology, check SkyValleyChronicle.com’s Sept. 3rd feature story on it HERE

Calendar set for 2010-2011 school year. The 2010-2011 calendar with school events is online and ready for families to begin planning for the new school year. You can view it online HERE

Each family will also receive a one –page version of the calendar in the U.S. Mail along with an invitation to review online the rules and regulations for public schools that families of students need to know as the new school year begins.
