(INDEX, WA) -- A Kayaker had a close call with death on the frigid, fast running Skykomish River Saturday afternoon.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office water rescue team responded to a report of a drowning kayaker who was trapped in his kayak on the river about 5 miles east of Index just after 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters from the Index fire department also responded along with officers from the East County patrol units of the sheriff’s office.

By the time they arrived it was discovered that two fellow kayakers had gotten the 50-year old Bellevue man onto a gravel bar and had performed CPR to revive him.

Rescue teams then were able to get the man off the gravel bar and onto shore for more treatment by conducting a rescue river crossing.

Medics at the scene treated the kayaker but he then declined to be taken to a hospital for further treatment.
