CLICK TO ENLARGE (GOLD BAR, WA) -- A young woman from Gold Bar escaped an apparent assault attempt and/or car jacking in Gold Bar Tuesday night by making sure her car doors were locked and keeping her wits about her in a fast moving situation.
Gold Bar Mayor Joe Beavers tells the Chronicle he was apprised of what happened by several area residents then talked with the girl’s family.
He was able to ascertain the following from family members:
Around 5:30 pm Tuesday evening the young woman left her residence to attend a basketball game in Sultan. The location where she entered her car is on Amanda Avenue in the Gold Bar Creekside area, just a block off U.S. Highway 2 and not far from Ricco’s Pizza restaurant. See map at upper right.
The woman, whose name was not released, made it to her car, locked the doors and started the engine.
“Suddenly someone ran up to the car and pounded on the passenger window yelling at her to let him in. He attempted to use the handle to open the door, but it was locked and he did not gain entry. She was able to quickly drive from the scene, very shaken but okay,” said Beavers.
The young woman drove to a public area before calling her family to let them know what happened.
The woman described the man as a Hispanic male with mustache, medium build and height and dressed in all black sweat pants and a hooded top.
Because it was dark the woman could not give an estimate of the man’s age.
RESIDENTS REMINDED TO CALL 911 ON SEEING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
Residents are advised to call 911 and report “suspicious activity” should they see strangers lurking furtively in the neighborhood or simply lingering about in the area for an extended length of time for no apparent reason, either on foot or in a vehicle.
It is not unusual for police to check on an individual following a suspicious activity call, only to find out the person they contact has an outstanding local warrant or is wanted for a crime in another jurisdiction.
Such contacts allow police to take wanted felons off the street and into custody even though the suspect in a suspicious activity call had not committed a crime at that moment.
