GENERAL VALLEY NEWS | | UPDATE ON MULTIPLE PATROL CAR COLLISION IN EVERETT February 03, 2010

(EVERETT, WA) -- The Everett Police Department continues to investigate multiple vehicle collisions that occurred at the intersection of Hewitt Avenue and Broadway Avenue in Everett at about 2:40 a.m. today.
The collisions involved four law enforcement vehicles, two from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) and two from the Everett Police Department.
Police say the incident began about 2:20 a.m. near the intersection of 132nd Street SE and 35th Avenue SE in unincorporated Snohomish County when a deputy from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s observed an occupied stolen vehicle.
“The deputy attempted a traffic stop of the vehicle however the driver failed to pull over and instead led deputies on a pursuit that made its way to north Everett,” said Everett Police Sergeant Robert Goetz
“The suspect’s vehicle ran over spike strips during the pursuit causing the tires to deflate. The suspect drove the vehicle up onto the sidewalk on the southwest corner of the Hewitt Avenue and Broadway Avenue, stopped the car and then fled on foot to the south along Broadway,” added Goetz.
Everett police officers, who were not actively involved in the pursuit, were in the area to assist with the arrest of the suspect if he fled on foot.
These officers arrived on scene almost immediately after the suspect’s vehicle came to rest and the first Everett officer to arrive stopped his vehicle in the southbound lanes of Broadway just north of Hewitt Avenue.
A SCSO deputy then stopped his vehicle near the Everett officer’s vehicle.
The Everett officer exited his patrol car in an attempt to assist in the foot chase of the suspect. The deputy had already exited his vehicle as well when a second SCSO deputy - who was traveling southbound on Broadway Avenue - came over a rise in the roadway and struck the parked SCSO vehicle.
The result of this collision then caused the struck SCSO vehicle to spin in the street striking the Everett police officer.
The fourth vehicle involved in this incident was an Everett police patrol vehicle.
“The officer was also coming into the area to assist in catching the fleeing suspect. He was traveling northbound on Broadway Avenue approaching the Hewitt Avenue intersection when he saw the collision between the other vehicles. The Everett officer was forced to take evasive action in order to avoid a second collision with the southbound traveling SCSO vehicle. He turned sharply to the right, leaving the roadway to the east, striking a concrete planter that was on the sidewalk in the northeast corner of the intersection, added Sgt. Goetz.
INJURED OFFICERS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
The officers and deputies we all taken to Everett Providence Hospital for examination. The deputies were treated and release.
The Everett officer, 23, who struck the planter was treated for two broken fingers and then released. He has about 1 ½ years of law enforcement experience.
The Everett officer, 28, who was struck by the SCSO vehicle remains in the hospital for treatment of two broken wrists and a broken knee. He is expected to remain in the hospital overnight. He has about 2 ½ years of law enforcement experience.
The suspect in the case, the alleged driver that precipitated the chase, is identified as 32-year old Andrew W. Holden.
“He is known to law enforcement as a prolific car thief. He was being sought by the Snohomish County Auto Theft Task Force for three counts of auto theft. He also had an active escape warrant from Department of Corrections,” added Goetz.
Holden was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle, eluding, resisting arrest, and the DOC warrant.
