STATE PATROL REMINDS DRIVERS Parking on highway shoulder to go ski is illegal January 15, 2012
Traffic jam up at Stevens Pass.
(WENATCHEE, WA) -- The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is reminding drivers not to park on the shoulder of the highway to go skiing because it is illegal.
Recently on Steven’s Pass the traffic congestion and parking was so bad that if needed in that area, a Transportation Dep’t plow truck or emergency workers would have had a difficult time getting through the congestion.
“With the snow in the forecast we expect an increase in skiers and snowboarders coming to the pass. Troopers will be out enforcing the laws regarding parking on the shoulders of the highway,” said Washington State Patrol (WSP) Lieutenant Kandi Patrick.
Skiers and other winter outdoor enthusiasts are reminded that the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) makes it unlawful for the operator of a vehicle to leave an unattended vehicle on a highway unless the operator of the vehicle arranges for the prompt removal of the vehicle.
The shoulders of the highway are for emergency use and emergency parking only. Parking on the shoulder to ski is not an emergency and is subject to a $124.00 fine and the possibility of the vehicle being impounded.
Motorists are reminded that prior to traveling this winter over Stevens Pass to check tee traffic web cams in the top right hand corner of the home page of SkyVallyChronicle.com.
