INJURED STEVENS PASS HIKER PLUCKED FROM NARROW LEDGE
September 19, 2008

(STEVENS PASS) -- A hiker who lost his footing and slid some 175 feet down a steep, rocky slope near Mt. Howard was air lifted to safety about 8:30 p.m. Monday night by a military chopper from the Whidbey Island Naval Air Base.

Mt. Howard is about ten miles east of the Stevens pass area and is the highest peak of Nason Ridge.

The hiker, identified as forty-nine year old Michael Stollov of Brier, Washington evidently was hiking alone when fell down the slope landing on a narrow ledge. Though uninjured he could not go up or down. Stollov called 911 on his cell phone just before 4:00 p.m. to report his predicament. He told rescuers from the Chelan county Sheriff’s office he was having trouble with his grip in part because of the cold.

Rescuers used GPS coordinates off Stollov’s cell phone signal to pinpoint where he was and find his exact location. A military helicopter from Whidbey Island Air Naval Base arrived at about 8:20 p.m. and used a winch to lift Stollov to safety.
