TOYS FOR KIDS: XMAS HOUSE NEEDS YOUR DONATION
December 03, 2008

Xmas House needs your donation.
(EVERETT, WA) -- A recent contribution of $10,000 to Christmas House in Everett from the Stillaguamish Tribe reminds us that Christmas is not far away and there are many in the community who need our help this time of year.

Christmas House is one of those amazing community based, community supported organizations that provide Christmas gifts every year to the children of low income families in Snohomish County.

Established in 1981, Christmas House helps over 2,900 Snohomish County families each year. It is operated by a 100% volunteer staff. These are local folks who put their lives on hold to help others at one of the busiest times of the year.

Christmas House is located in Everett, in the Boys and Girls Club of Snohomish County gymnasium. Christmas House is administered by a local Board of Directors (Rick Kvangnes, General Manager of Judd & Black is President) and staffed by hundreds of volunteers during the Christmas season.

And this year community donations of money to purchase toys may be needed more than in past years with rapidly growing unemployment and the prospects of a harsh recession on the horizon. Already this year the American economy has lost over 1 Million jobs following the collapse of the housing and mortgage industries and the rise of the credit crunch shortly thereafter.

A total of 8,300 infants, youth and teens from 2,900 families within Snohomish County received clothing, blankets, toys and personal items during the past Christmas House season. Within the county Christmas House has have served families from 20 cities, plus families in unincorporated Snohomish County.

HOW TO DONATE

You can donate or volunteer to help at Christmas House, located at the Everett Boys and Girls Club at 2316 - 12th Street, Everett, WA 98201. Checks may also be mailed to: Christmas House P.O. Box 717 Everett, WA 98206. More information is available at the group's web site at http://christmas-house.org.

Christmas House was founded in 1981 by Roy Fraser in his garage. Roy had heard of children in Snohomish County who had not received anything for the prior Christmas and was determined to change that.

He established the first annual Christmas House and stocked it primarily with used toys and handmade items, which they refurbished and gave away to families in need. They served more than 100 children the first year.

Unfortunately, Roy did not live to see the second Christmas House, but his memory lives on as local volunteers of Chrostmas House now look forward to their 28th year of service to the community in Roy’s honor.

The Sky Valley Chronicle joins with other community businesses in asking for your support for Christmas House by donating what you can.
