’Spiderman’ was undocumented 22-year old immigrant. For his heroism he will be rewarded with French citizenship
(PARIS, FRANCE) – It was by all accounts a stunning rescue of a child in peril. The kind you usually see only in the movies.
But this was as real as it gets and what a cliff hanger, literally. For a harrowing minute or so no one knew if the child would live or die.
A migrant from Maili, a west African nation, who cast his own safety to the wind and performed a stunning feat of high-wire agility by rapidly scaling the front of a building in Paris – with no safety rope or net – to save a small boy hanging from a fourth-floor balcony, is being hailed across Europe as a hero.
The man’s name is Mamoudou Gassama and his spectacular rescue of the child went viral on social media.
The amazing event, which happened Saturday night on a street in Paris’s north end was captured on video and posted on Facebook .
A larger video format of the rescue can be found here .
Mr. Gassama told local reporters he’s been walking past the building when he saw a crowd gathered in front of it, looked up and saw the child dangling.
French President Emmanuel Macron invited Mr Gassama to the Elysee Palace on Monday to thank him in person.
After the meeting, Macron revealed that Mr.Gassama, a 22-year-old undocumented immigrant would be granted French citizenship and enrolled as a firefighter in the French fire service, according to French news reports.
During the meeting Gassama told Macron he was “trembling” when he scaled the building.
By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the child had already been rescued. It was not immediately clear how the small child ended up on the outside of the building holding on to that ledge.
Paris’s mayor Anne Hidalgo also had praise for the young hero on Twitter for his "act of bravery" as well as phoning him personally to thank him. Hidalgo said that Gassama told her he had “arrived from Mali a few months ago dreaming of building his life here.”
Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa of just over 14 million people, located southwest of Algeria. The official language of the country is French.
