ONE MAN KILLED, FOUR INJURED IN HEAD ON CRASH ON HIGHWAY 2 NEAR INDEX

(INDEX, WA) -- It was another one of those terrible head on collisions on U.S. Highway 2 in the upper Sky Valley. The accident Saturday killed a Federal Way man and injured four others.

The state patrol says the accident happened about 4:15 pm Saturday just east of Index on US 2 on the way to Stevens Pass.
The driver of a black 2002 Mercedes Benz 240 was headed westbound on the highway when at milepost 37 it made an illegal pass on a double yellow line curve - a no passing zone - and crashed into a westbound traveling maroon colored 2005 Ford F250 pickup truck, according to the state patrol.
A state patrol trooper said the Mercedes was traveling erratically just before the crash.
Killed by the impact was the driver of the Mercedes identified as 22-year old Denis E. Sokolik of Federal Way. The Mercedes was totaled in the accident which tied up traffic on the pass for close to four hours.
A passenger in Sokolik's vehicle identified as a 22-year old woman, Yaroslavl Chernyak of Federal Way, reported to be pregnant in published reports, was injured and was transported to the Colby campus of Providence Hospital in Everett.
The Ford pickup truck was totaled by the impact. The driver of the pickup, identified as Wayne L. Barnhart, 64, of East Wenatchee was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Two passengers in the pickup were injured.They were identified as Michael P. Green, 70, of East Wenatchee who was taken to Harborview in Seattle as well and Bruce E. Bratrude, 54, also of East Wenatchee and also taken to Harborview.
