FEATURE NEWS | | NEW STUDY SHOWS COLLEGE GRADS WITH ADVANCED DEGREES Just as vulnerable as high school grads to long-term joblessness February 03, 2012

Pew study on unemployment. CLICK TO OPEN AND READ (NATIONAL) -- The results of a new study may be a stunner for anyone who has invested tens of thousands of dollars and years of effort in a college education in order to get and keep good paying jobs.
College graduates and advanced degree holders, once they are unemployed, are just as vulnerable as high school dropouts to long-term joblessness, according to a Pew Fiscal Analysis Initiative study published Wednesday.
The study found that thirty five percent of unemployed college graduates and those with advanced degrees have been without a job for more than a year, which is the same rate as unemployed high school dropouts.
And just as concerning is the fact the study found the long-term unemployment rate for those 25 and older without a job, is almost the same across all levels of educational achievements.
The percentage of the labor force that is facing long-term unemployment is at a record high of 2.8 percent, according to the report. Thirteen million Americans are unemployed and 4 million of those unemployed people, about 31 percent, have been unemployed for more than a year.
And adding insult to injury, the long-term unemployed also often face job discrimination for no other reason than they have been out of work for so long,
Some employers now require job applicants to be "currently employed" in order to be considered for an open position.
