Chronicle news & opinion
(NATIONAL) – Glen Beck, a former Mount Vernon boy who got his media chops wet in radio broadcasting in this state and went on to become later in life one of the more interesting and successful far right conspiracy media pundits, is a man used to spouting long monologues on radio and TV about the way things are.
Or at least the way he thinks things are.
He is not a man, by and large, used to being asked pointed questions by other media folks who then expect him to answer those questions, no matter how personally uncomfortable they may be.
Case in point: Sunday Beck walked off a live CNN interview with the network’s media specialist Brian Stelter after Stelter asked Beck about a recent Daily Beast report that said his media company, TheBlaze was in dire financial straits.
When Stelter said, “I do have to ask you this. There’s this new headline in The Daily Beast saying you’re company was in trouble, that you were trying to find a buyer…..”
There was about a three second pause after that question and then Beck said, “Wow. Brian, thanks a lot.” And with that Beck started to take off his lapel microphone and uttered a few more words before standing up and leaving the set. “I think that’s the most ridiculous question I’ve ever heard….I...I’m sitting here ready to talk to you about the detaining of children and parents and trying to break families apart...we want to stop it and you play those games? Have a nice day.”
And with that, Beck got up and walked off the set.
Cry Me A River
The Daily Beast in a June 22 report titled, “Cry Me A River: Glen Beck’s Media Empire Implodes. Again,” said “The conservative mogul’s business woes continue via another round of layoffs and the death of a sale to the billionaires backing fellow right-wing media giant Ben Shapiro.”
The report said TheBlaze “appears to be on its last legs...after a prospective high-profile buyer lost interest.”
The story says Beck’s media company, that he started shortly before “he exited Fox News in 2011” fired more staffers that week, “Shrinking a workforce that has already been reduced to less than 50 employees, according to two sources who spoke with The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity. The two sources also confirmed that more than a dozen employees had been laid off over the past several days.”
And to make matters worse, says the report, the company’s hopes for a white Knight bailout from a fellow “right-wing titan” didn’t go well.
That was a proposed sale to the billionaire owners of conservative commentator Ben Shapiro’s website “The Daily Wire,” a sale that now appears unlikely according to The Beast, which also says Beck’s media empire once generated a reported $90 million in revenue annually, “But has been in a slow motion implosion over the past several years. Top-level managerial shakeups, seemingly ceaseless layoffs, and office closures have depleted morale, tanked the site’s web traffic, and caused cable distributors to jump ship.”
So if you can believe the Beast’s reporting, Beck’s media conglomerate is now in a world of serious hurt after a slow, two year downhill slide.
Shedding employees, expensive toys and the big house
The Beast report says TheBlaze has shed employees with regularity for more than two years and that, “Beck’s flair for conspiratorial, right-wing rants were largely seen as a precursor to the Trumpism that has overtaken conservatism in recent years. But as his empire began to crumble, right around the time Trump was elected to office, Beck—who likened Trump to Hitler—began to team up with mainstream media and liberal celebrities, rebranding himself as a born-again champion of civility.”
But that didn’t work, says The Beast and Beck ultimately flip-flopped and went and donned Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” hat in May and said on the air, “I will vote for him in 2020! Gladly!”
A few other items from The Beast report:
~ Beck is getting rid of many of his more expensive possessions (including his big house in a Dallas suburb, up for sale, and his radio company’s DC-9 private jet which was put up for sale earlier this year).
~ Some of Beck’s media empire employees suspect Beck may be looking to close up shop at TheBlaze’s headquarters in Dallas and relocate to Los Angeles, where the company still maintains a “smaller office.”
