(SULTAN, WA.) -- The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office says an unidentified man was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after being submerged for a long time under the frigid and always dangerous waters of the Skykomish River.

Calls to 911 started coming in just before 3:00 pm reporting there was a man yelling for help in the river, according to sheriff's office spokesperson Shari Ireton.
Witnesses said the man had been acting strangely before jumping into the river. A short time later, after first appearing to be swimming, the man became distressed and started calling for help.
Rescue crews pulled the man out from under about 12 feet of water. He'd been submerged for roughly a half an hour by then, according to the sheriff's office.
About 4:00 pm the man was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
The Skykomish, always a dangerous river
At any time of the year the Skykomish River can turn deadly in a heartbeat. On the 4th of July weekend this year a man's body was found floating in the Skykomish, also in the upper Sky Valley area of the county.
The previous month, in June two people were swept away by the fast moving river over Sunset Falls in Index. One was a 49-year old man from Seattle and the other a 25-year old woman visiting from Texas.
"At approximately 3:45 pm on June 17...a male and female were walking along a road way near the raging Skykomish River when the 49 year old male slipped and fell into the water," said Lieutenant John Flood of the sheriff's office at that time.
The man and woman own a cabin in the area and were taking photos on the rocks at the top of the falls when the man reached down to grab a bag, slipped and fell over the falls according to Snohomish County Fire District 7.
And earlier that same month, a 49-year old man went missing on June 17 after he fell into the river near Sunset Falls.
