FEATURE NEWS | | MAN WITH MISSING ARM It was chopped off with a guillotine October 28, 2011

(BELLINGHAM, WA) -- It is not often a man walks into a medical clinic with a severed arm. It is even more rare if the armless man chopped it off himself using a homemade guillotine.
But that is apparently what happened Thursday morning in Bellingham.
Police say an unidentified Bellingham made himself a very large medieval style guillotine from scrap material he scavenged and then chopped his own arm off with the contraption. The man told police the wound was self-inflicted although it was not immediately clear if the arm severing was an accident or intentional.
Police received a call from the medical clinic in the 300 block of Birchwood Avenue late Thursday morning with the caller saying a man had just walked in with one arm missing.
As paramedics took the man away for treatment to a local hospital, police went to a wooded area near the clinic and found a severed human arm and a homemade guillotine at a makeshift camp where the man had evidently been living.
Officers brought the arm to the hospital in the hopes the arm could be reattached. The man was eventually airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment.
Officers later took a chainsaw to the guillotine to dismantle it so no one else could get hurt by it.
