(GRANITE FALLS, WA.) – The Washington State Patrol says a car ran into a motorcycle rider Sunday night in Granite Falls, killing the rider.

The incident happened early in the evening Sunday at a roundabout on Quarry Road. Granite Falls is in Snohomish County.

According to Trooper H. Axtman, the causing driver then pepper sprayed a witness to the incident and then fled from the scene in his vehicle. The driver was stopped an arrested about a mile and half away from the crash.

KOMO-TV in Seattle reported the driver of the Mazda that ran into the motorcycle is a a 22-year-old man from Lake Stevens, Washington and that the motorcycle rider who was killed was also a lake Stevens resident, a 29-year old man.

Hit & Run Accidents On The Increase

The Washington State Patrol released the following statement on January 18:

"Help the Washington State Patrol Solve Hit and Run Collisions.

You hope it never happens to you, but there’s always the unfortunate chance that you’ll be involved in a collision. A million thoughts are running through your head and to make matters worse the driver of the other vehicle has now fled the scene of the collision. You end up asking yourself, ‘what do I do?’

We know your safety and the safety of your passengers is your biggest concern, it is ours as well. But, if you’re safe and in a position to get the license plate of the running vehicle, that will be the most valuable piece of the puzzle that you can provide us.

There are several ways to obtain the license plate; cell phone picture, writing it down, or even telling the 9-1-1 dispatcher. Having a dash cam mounted in your vehicle also helps capture the needed information.

The majority of the time that a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper is provided the license plate of a vehicle that is fleeing, we are able to later track down the suspect and file charges for Hit and Run.

The WSP has noticed an upward trend of Hit and Run Collisions throughout the state. Even though we don’t have all the reasons people run away, we do have a way you can help; get as much information from the vehicle as you can, specifically the license plate."
