CHANGE IN WEATHER
COLD ON THE WAY,
MAYBE SOME SNOW

March 07, 2010

(SEATTLE, WA) -- After a gorgeous, Spring like Saturday in the Sky Valley and throughout Western Washington, the National Weather Service says one of the coldest air masses to reach the area in weeks, maybe months, is moving in and that could bring some snow to a few areas.

The service says an unstable air mass moving in to Western Washington today (Sunday) will be the start of what may be an extended period of unsettled weather patterns more like our area would experience in November, with changing weather systems arriving about every 24 to 36 hours.

A quick change to much colder weather is expected Sunday night when a cold front from Alaska passes into Western Washington from late Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening.

That cold front will be followed by the coldest air mass to be seen in Western Washington since at least February 10th.

By Monday look for daytimes temperatures to only reach the low to mid 40’s over the lowlands of Western Washington, dipping into the 20’s over the mountains.

After weeks of above normal temperatures this change may feel abrupt to many people.

Monday night and into Tuesday snow levels will be dropping to around 1,500 feet, with the potential for a convergence zone to develop Monday night into Tuesday, and that means the chance of some light snow in some of the higher hills north of Seattle as well as the Kitsap Peninsula.

In general, showers and sun breaks will prevail on Monday and Monday night with showers being the most numerous in the Puget Sound convergence zone between Seattle and Everett. Some of those showers may be in the form of localized snow accumulations.

Below is the official National Weather Service statement:

...A QUICK CHANGE TO MUCH COLDER WEATHER IS EXPECTED ON SUNDAY NIGHT...

A COLD FRONT WILL PASS WESTERN WASHINGTON FROM LATE SUNDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING. THE FRONT WILL BE FOLLOWED BY THE COLDEST AIR MASS TO BE SEEN IN WESTERN WASHINGTON SINCE AT LEAST FEBRUARY 10...PERHAPS LONGER.

BY MONDAY...DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL ONLY REACH THE LOWER TO MID 40S OVER THE LOWLANDS WITH 20S OVER THE MOUNTAINS. AFTER WEEKS OF ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES...THIS CHANGE IN THE WEATHER MAY FEEL ESPECIALLY ABRUPT. LOW TEMPERATURES ON MONDAY NIGHT SHOULD BE AT OR BELOW FREEZING FOR ALL OF THE LOWLANDS.

IN ADDITION...SHOWERS AND SUN BREAKS WILL PREVAIL ON MONDAY AND MONDAY EVENING. SHOWERS WILL BE MOST NUMEROUS IN THE PUGET SOUND CONVERGENCE ZONE BETWEEN SEATTLE AND EVERETT. GIVEN THE COLD AIR MASS...HEAVIER SHOWERS WILL BE CAPABLE BRINGING LOCALIZED SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...ESPECIALLY ON HILLS NORTH AND NORTHEAST OF SEATTLE.
