(GOLD BAR, WA.) – The body of an unidentified woman was recovered Tuesday evening from the pond below the lower falls at Wallace Falls State Park in east Snohomish County.
The 4700-acre park has a series of waterfalls, nine in all, two that are considered the most visually stunning and one that is the tallest at 265 feet in height.
“Visitors to the area who were taking photos noticed the woman's body bobbing in the water and called 911 around 4 pm,” said Shari Ireton, Director of Communications for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. “Fire District 26, assisted by Fire District 7, arrived on-scene to search the waters and the Sheriff's Office helicopter, SnoHAWK1, conducted an aerial search.”
With assistance from the Sheriff's Office Dive Team, the body was recovered from the water and transported by fire units to be handed over to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.
Ireton added that the visitors who called 911 do not know the woman, nor has anyone at the park come forward to report a missing person. As of Tuesday night, the identity of the woman or how she came to be in the water were not known.
The Medical Examiner will work to identify the woman as well as provide a cause and manner of death.
The Wallace Falls trail is a popular hiking destination at the park. Over the years there have been a number of deaths and injuries in and around the falls.
Six months ago a man died near the middle falls
The last death prior to Tuesday’s discovery was in late September of 2017 when a Seattle man died over a weekend in a fall near the middle falls.
On Sunday Sept, 24th of last year a woman called 911 to report her 33-year old husband and the family dog had fallen over an embankment near the Sky Valley Lookout at the middle falls during a hiking outing.
Local fire district rescue personnel were able to rescue the couple’s dog but the man's body was found at the base of middle falls.
One month earlier, on August 21, 2017a badly injured 38-year woman was rescued from a ledge near Wallace Falls. She had taken a fall and sustained critical injuries.
Personnel from the Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Unit (SAR), Gold Bar Fire Dept. (Snohomish County Fire District 26) and Washington State Parks as well as volunteers from Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue, were deployed that Monday afternoon after an emergency beacon was activated in Wallace Falls State Park.
"The beacon was activated after a woman, who had been "canyoneering" with others, lost control of "braking" her climbing rope and fell several feet onto a ledge near the falls around 4 pm," said a sheriff's office spokesperson at the time.
The woman was eventually flown to Harborview Regional Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries.
