Week Number 3 Of Clearing Snow Off North Cascades Highway
April 13, 2018

(NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY) – Washington State Transportation Dept. crews are into week number three of the annual job of clearing the snow from our state's most scenic highway, State Route 20, otherwise known as the North Cascades Highway.

State Route 20 is the northernmost route across the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington state and is commonly referred to as the North Cascades Highway. This Scenic Byway offers travelers a wide array of beautiful vistas and is part of the Cascade Loop , a 400-mile driving tour through the Cascades

Every year work crews have to remove tons and tons of deep snow to open the pass for driving cross state on SR 20 during the Spring, Summer and Fall months. If you’re planning to visit our state during the months SR 20 is open, you really should make the drive over to eastern Washngton on it or vice-versa because the views are spectacular.

Last year the pass opened for travel on May 16. Check out the nice photo montage below of the snow clearing work to date….

Once the SR 20/North Cascade Highway gates open at milepost 134 and 171, the highway will remain open through the summer and into fall. Crews will close it when conditions in avalanche chutes become unsafe, usually a week or so before or after Thanksgiving.

When the highway is closed, skiers, backpackers, snowmobilers and other adventurers are welcome to use the closed stretch at their own risk. When crews are working on clearing, the area is closed Monday through Thursday.
