WOUNDED WHALE IN SOUTH SOUND DIES
December 05, 2010

(SHELTON,WA) -- That large whale that appeared to have been severely wounded by the propeller or propellers of a boat in the Totten Inlet area of South Puget Sound, has been found dead on a beach there.

The story about the whale, and photos of the animal’s injuries, can be found HERE

The 40-foot whale “was reported dead on a beach this (Sat.) morning and was examined by Cascadia biologists before it was submerged by an incoming high tide,” said a statement from Cascadia Research, which researches and monitors the whale populations in Puget Sound.

“The preliminary examination showed the animal was a Bryde's whale and had additional injuries other than those visible when it was alive. Arrangements are currently being made for possible relocation of the whale, if needed, and also for a complete examination that will be conducted in coming days,” the statement concluded.

Earlier this week offcials with Cascadia said the whale had serious injuries was not likely to survive its wounds.

There were repeated sightings of the injured whale in the south Puget Sound area going back to at least November 25th and possibly as early as 13 November.
