MONROE SCHOOL DISTRICT
Wednesday, September 8 is the first day of school for grades K-6 and 9. This staggered start schedule allows the incoming kindergarten, 6th and 9th graders a day to become acquainted with their new schools.
Kindergarteners will attend an orientation with their families and should have received an invitation with a special time to arrive at school. Students in grade 1-6 and 9 will attend all day. All students, K-12, attend on Thursday, September 9.
New ethnicity/race data reporting takes effect. Changes in federal and state laws require families to verify their child's ethnicity/race this year.
The law requires schools to have ethnicity/race each student, which differs from the past, when a "not provided" option existed.
Each family will receive an email alerting them to the new requirement and steps to verify the data. Families without email addresses on record will receive a letter in the U.S. mail.
The new laws offer 57 options for families to select. If families do not provide this data then the law requires schools to select a category. Monroe school staff will not "observe" students for this selection.
For families not responding, Monroe's selection will simply default to "Non Hispanic/Latino" and "White". The district’s communication office can help with questions.
BEWARE OF NEW ROBOT OVER-THE- SPEED-LIMIT “TICKETING MACHINE” AROUND MONROE SCHOOLS THIS YEAR
Some of you may not be aware that the Monroe Police Department is kicking into gear on Sept. 8 a new robot “speed camera” device that will catch speeding drivers without them being the least bit aware they’ve been clocked and had.
The object of the new technology – which is hosed in an unmarked, ordinary looking white SUV – is to make kids and school staffers safer by getting drivers to slow it down to the speed limit in school zones.
To find out everything there is to know about the new technology, check SkyValleyChronicle.com’s Sept. 3rd feature story on it HERE
