(TUMWATER, WA.) – Police in Thurston County are investigating shooting early Sunday evening related to an attempted carjacking in which the carjack suspect was shot and killed by an armed citizen.
Authorities say police officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 5 pm Sunday evening at a Walmart Supercenter store in Tumwater.
Police had originally responded to the area on a report of a car driving in the wrong way near Israel Road and Tyee Drive and as officers were headed there they were dispatched to reports of a carjacking nearby where shots had been fired.
Police arrived to find a 16-year-old girl who had sustained non-life threatening injuries as her car was being stolen. Police found that car in the Walmart parking lot located at 5900 Littlerock Road SW in Tumwater just as calls began coming in to 911 about shots being fired in that same general area.
Authorities say the suspect in the earlier carjacking involving the teenager’s car had gone into the Walmart store itself and opened fire with a gun at a display case, then left the store and tried to carjack another vehicle in the parking lot.
In that attempt police say the suspect shot a man inside that car, critically wounding the man.
The suspect then tried to carjack another vehicle in the Walmart parking lot and by this time two armed civilians were approaching him and one of those armed civilians shot and killed the as yet unidentified man.
The motive for the crime spree on the part of the deceased man remains unknown at present.
