(SNOHOMISH, WA.) – A longtime treasurer of the Machias Community Cemetery, which runs on donations and fundraisers, has been accused of embezzling thousands of dollars over a six-year period, according to a Seattle TV report.
The cemetery is located at 1204 Silva Road in Snohomish.
KOMO-TV in Seattle reported that 46-year-old Dawn Angela of Lake Stevens is accused by prosecutors of transferring more than $17,000 as treasurer from the cemetery's bank account into two personal accounts over a six-year period going back to 2010.
The TV station report says red flags went up in 2016 when a paycheck bounced for the groundskeeper, who is the only paid staffer at the cemetery. Ms. Angela told a board of directors' member she was struggling with her mortgage payment after her divorce, according to the story.
She has been charged with theft and is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 18.
