Three people lose their lives in hit & run crash on Interstate 5
March 08, 2018

Chronicle Staff

(LAKEWOOD, WA.) – The Washington State Patrol says three people lost their lives in a hit-and-run collision Thursday morning in Lakewood.

The incident happened southbound on Interstate 5 about 2:15 am.

The WSP says an impaired driver caused the deaths by swerving a car across multiple southbound lanes and colliding into another vehicle.

The impact of the collision sent the second vehicle into the jersey barrier where it flipped onto its roof. Two people in that car were killed instantly, a third person was trapped in the vehicle and later died.

The impact of that crash also sent the vehicle’s engine block sailing into the northbound lanes of I-5 where it was hit by another vehicle traveling northbound.

Luckily those in the vehicle that hit that engine block were not hurt.

But there was yet more carnage to result from the incident. While state troopers were focusing on the fatalities in the southbound lanes, DuPont police came to assist in the northbound lanes and there a DuPont police officer was hit while inside his vehicle by a semi-truck and was taken to local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

An off duty Seattle Police dispatcher was in the area and happened to witness the events and followed the vehicle that caused all the mayhem and that driver was eventually apprehended a few miles south of the accident scene.

The driver was a 23-year old man. He was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, hit-and-run, possession of a stolen gun and three counts of vehicular homicide. A female passenger in the suspect’s car was not arrested.

For hours all lanes of southbound I-5 in the area were shut down for the investigation as well as multiple lanes of northbound I-5, creating a miles long backup. The lane closures were expected to be in effect through much of the Thursday morning commute.
