(INDIA) – If you’re a woman in India, you are living life on the edge fighting for your rights as a human being not be attacked and raped and/or sex trafficked by some ring of criminal thugs.
This is how dangerous it is to be a woman in India. The BBC reports that, according to police, five Indian “anti-trafficking activists” performing a street play, of all milk-toast things, were gang-raped at gunpoint in the eastern state of Jharkhand.
The report says the women were forced into cars and raped in a "secluded area", police told BBC Hindi. Officers say they’re investigating the incident but have not made any arrests yet.
The women were working with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to simply raise awareness about human trafficking (a form of slavery) in the remote Khunti district.
There were some 40,000 rapes reported in India in 2016 alone but the BBC says, “Many cases...are believed to go unreported because of the stigma that is attached to rape and sexual assault.”
