(SEATTLE, WA.) -- It is something no one in this country has ever seen before. Thousands of students here in the northwest and across the country fed up with gun violence in schools, fed up with no action by lawmakers will walk out of their schools at 10 am today in memorial of the 17 people murdered with an assault-style rifle at the Parkland, Fla., school shooting and as a call for stricter gun laws in this nation.

Most state laws, however prohibit students and teachers from leaving their classes for a walkout. Some schools have said students who ignore the law and walk out anyway will not face further repercussions. Some schools are planning their own events or as an alternative to the planned 17-minute walkouts.

At Ballard High School in Seattle students have planned a 17-minute walkout at a street corner outside the building. The school itself has planned a sanctioned event for students and staff members where they will go to the athletic field and walk around the track in silence.

NBC News has an interactive MAP here showing all the schools in our state and across the nation that have planned school walkouts today.

Today's generation of high school students is the first generation in this country to live with the constant and very real fear and knowledge that someone with anger and/or mental issues can easily get their hands on a high capacity semi-auto rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammo and can walk in at any time to their schools and end their lives.

For these students the gun issue is not an abstract. It is hard reality. The question they ask is, Why does your 2nd amendment right mean I have to live in fear in my school? What about my right to live without fear, my right to live period?
