Update 12:43 pm: It was announced at the news conference today that the reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer or killers of Tom Wales has been increased to $1.525 million. The reward consists of up to $1 million from the Justice Dept. and a newly announced reward of $525,000 from the National Association of Former United States Attorneys.

At the news conference U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said that the FBI continues to aggressively pursue leads in the Wales murder. Te news event was held in the Thomas C. Wales Conference Room at the U.S. Courthouse in Seattle. It was named in honor of Wales.

Original story is below

(SEATTLE, WA.) – The FBI and the Department of Justice have scheduled a news conference in Seattle for Wednesday (today) during which Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the department’s No. 2 ranking official, is expected to discuss the unsolved 2001 homicide of Thomas Wales.

Wales, 49, was working as a white-collar criminal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle when he was shot several times while sitting at a computer in the basement of his Queen Anne home about 10:40 p.m. on Oct. 11, 2001. A lone male was seen running from the area.

The FBI has been searching vigorously for his killer ever since. Now, there’s a report that the agency has found evidence strongly suggesting that the murder of Tom Wales with a Makarov 9mm handgun involved a conspiracy and a hired gunman, according to a report published by The Seattle Times.

The basis of the story is an unnamed source, an “FBI official familiar with the investigation.” For many years the FBI pursued a single-shooter theory in the case that centered on a former Bellevue-area airline pilot that Wales once prosecuted in a white collar crime case. The unnamed pilot has always professed his innocence, according to published reports.

The Times report says while agents continue to look at all leads that remain in the case, they are reviewing possible ties between the pilot and a small circle of people who agents think were involved in the killing, according to an FBI official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Agents also continue to trace more than 2,600 replacement barrels for a Makarov handgun that forensic evidence linked to the bullets and shell casings recovered from Wales and the crime scene.
