(PIERCE COUNTY, WA.) – The Pierce County Sheriff’s office says a suspected car thief led deputies on a high speed chase on I-5 Friday until he crashed the car on the Nisqqually Bridge, got out and then jumped off the bridge into the river.
Just after 10 am Friday this tweet from the sheriff’’s office: “Stolen vehicle fled southbound I 5 followed by special ops team of Sheriffs Dept. Vehicle caught fire at Nisqually Bridge. Suspect jumped off bridge into river. I 5 blocked. Air and water rescue units dispatched.”
By 10:42 am all lanes of I-5 were reopened, the stolen, banged up car was cleared from the bridge and a Thurston County K-9 team was tracking the suspect along the river’s shoreline.
However the guy got away. They were unable to find him.
The Olympian Newspaper said that a sheriff's special operations team had been following the stolen car because the driver was suspected of some "criminal activity.” So they chased the car from the Lakewood area to southbound I-5 until the suspect lost control of the car, crashed it on the bridge then got out and jumped into the river.
The report said it did not appear the suspect was hurt (or at least hurt badly) since he was seen swimming to shore.
