The bombs found at
Long Beach, WA
March 09, 2018
(LONG BEACH, WA.) – Long Beach, population about 1400 is about as quiet and sleepy a coastal village as you’ll find anywhere in the country.
It’s known mostly for its beach and boardwalk on the Long Beach Peninsula as well as its World Kite Museum. But crime? No, not known for crime.
And bomb planting? No, definitively not known for people planting bombs.
Which makes it all the more curious that police are warning folks to watch out for explosives and strange packages after two bombs were found downtown on Monday afternoon.
Serious bombs. The Chinook Observer newspaper quotes Long Beach Police Officer Jeff Cutting as saying, “Somebody went to a lot of trouble to build these. They were meant to kill somebody.”
Meant to kill? In a sleepy hamlet like Long Beach? That’s some serious crime business for a place that small and that far away from a major metro area.
Just before 5 pm Monday a caller reports a suspicious bag near the public restrooms on Third Street SW. There, police find two bombs that were left in white, plastic garbage sacks. Canning jars inside the sacks were full of a maroon gelatin material.
The bombs were removed from the area and about four hours later the Washington State Patrol bomb squad shows up.
X-Rays were taken and eventually, carefully, the bomb guys find shrapnel, shotgun shells and rat poison in the jars. Serious bomb stuff for serious killing.
Bomb squad digs a deep hole and blows those bad boys up.
The question is, who in the world would do such a thing in a tiny dot on the world map like Long Beach? You might expect crazy stuff like that in New York, Chicago, L.A. but.....tiny Long Beach?
It boggles the imagination.
Police would not mind having a few tips, a few leads to go on. If you've got something to give, ring them up on the telly at 360-642-3416.
