(SEATTLE, WA.) – A King County Sheriff’s spokesman, Sgt. Ryan Abbott has told reporters that the shooting deaths of two teenage girls at a Burien apartment complex parking lot is suspected to be gang related.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 pm Wednesday night. Sheriff’s deputies were called on a report of “shots fired” to an apartment complex in the 13900 block of Ambaum Blvd NW.
When they got there they found the badly wounded teens in a parking lot as well as what one TV station report described as “a chaotic scene with people running around.”
Although the Medical Examiner's Office did not release the names of the victims, published reports identified one of the victims as a 19-year old girl who lives in Vancouver, Washington and had been visiting relatives at the apartment complex. The other victim was described as a girl of about 13 or 14 years of age.
Investigators have not released information about a suspect in the shootings. The sheriff’s office said the shootings occurred after an altercation between some young people near one of the parking lots at the apartment complex, in the 13900 block of Ambaum Boulevard Southwest.
Many shots were fired, the two girls were hit by bullets and a suspect or suspects ran to a vehicle and left the area.
The Seattle Times spoke with a 16-year old girl who lives at the complex and knew both victims of the shooting. She told the newspaper the teens were with a group of kids and that the teens had argued with the shooter.
She also told the newspaper that the two girls that were shot and killed were affiliated with one gang while the shooter was a member of a rival gang.
According to the report, counting Wednesday’s double murder, some four people ages 19 or younger have been killed in shootings at the Alturas @ Burien complex since January 2016.
