(SEATTLE, WA.) -- Seattle Mayor Ed Murray made national news yesterday when he announced his resignation just hours after the news hit that a relative, a younger cousin of his had become the fifth person to allege publicly that Murray had sexually molested him.

The story is being carried by The New York Times, CNN, ABC News and many other national news platforms. Murray, 62, is a Democrat and Seattle's first openly gay mayor. He had served in the State Legislature for many years before being elected Mayor in 2013.

The City Council president, Bruce Harrell, will become the new mayor, temporarily.

Murray's younger cousin, Joseph Dyer, now 54, claims Murray molested him in the 1970s in New York, according to a report by The Seattle Times.

Hours after that accusation was made public, Murray resigned but he denied ever abusing Dyer.

Murray did not appear at a news conference, instead choosing to announce his resignation via a statement. He said his resignation would be effective at 5 pm today.

In his statement Murray said, "While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business."

Dyer gave an interview to The Seattle Times in which he said he was 13 years old when Murray forced him into sex for about a year while the two shared a bedroom in Dyer's mother's home in Medford, New York.

Dyer told the newspaper there would be times, "When I would fake sleeping because I didn't want him touching me. And that's when he would molest me."

Dyer claims the molestation stopped only after a boy in a Catholic group home where Murray worked accused Murray of abuse. His uncle, Dyer said, negotiated to get group-home officials not to pursue charges as long as Murray left. After that, Murray left town and Dyer said he never saw or spoke to his cousin again, according to the newspaper report.

The story also says two of Murray’s sisters came to the Mayor's defense, saying the allegation by Dyer, known among relatives for years, is the result of Dyer's side of the family having a deep hatred for the Murray side of the family.

Both Dyer and his 76-year old mother - who said her son told her of the abuse several months after Murray moved out of their house - said they are speaking out now after learning recently of the other men who have accused Murray and because they’re outraged by Murray’s denials, according to the Times report.
