 BREAKING NEWS | | RUNAWAY TOYOTA DRIVER CALLS 911 March 09, 2010

(LOS ANGELES, CA) — The driver of a Toyota Prius in San Diego County who called 911 on Monday to report his accelerator was stuck finally got the car stopped after about half an hour with the help of the California Highway Patrol.
"He was reaching speeds over 90 miles per hour," Patrol Officer Larry Landeros said of the driver, James Sikes.
Sikes, who was eastbound on a freeway, told the 911 operator "the car seemed to accelerate on its own after he passed another car."
A highway patrol car caught up to the Prius about 20 minutes later and officer Landeros used a loudspeaker to tell the driver to apply his emergency brake in tandem with the brake pedal to slow the car.
Once the Prius' speed dropped to about 50 mph, Sikes turned off the engine and coasted to a stop. No one was hurt.
The Prius that Sikes was driving was one of more than 4 million Toyota models that had been recalled.
A Toyota spokesman said the company would investigate the incident on Interstate 8 in San Diego County.
