(SPOKANE, WA.) – Spokane County sheriff’s deputies say a local man tortured, mutilated and killed one of his own horses because an ex-girlfriend didn’t want to be with him anymore and that animal was her “favorite” horse.
Clinton P. Burrill, 45, was arrested Monday. He faces a charge of first-degree animal cruelty, which is a a felony. In court Tuesday a judge set bond for Burrill at $20,000.
The Spokesman Review newspaper said deputies were called to Burrill’s residence in the 9500 block of East Woolard Road in north Spokane County at about 10 a.m. Monday, where they found a horse laying on its side on a steep hill just outside of a horse pen.
The animal’s tail had been chopped off. Around its front ankles was a short rope tying it to a fence and another rope was around the animal's neck. Due to injuries found on the animal and a large amount of blood, deputies believed the horse was tortured before it was killed, according to the newspaper report. After a brief chase on foot, Burrill surrendered and was arrested without incident.
Earlier Tuesday, Burrill’s ex-girlfriend had called the sheriff’s office to report a bag of items left on her front porch. She opened it and found a handkerchief tied around a lock of horse tail hairs with the tag “77” on it.
Deputies believe the bag was left to “scare, intimidate and harass” the woman, according to the newspaper report which also noted the woman had lived with Burrill at his home but ended the relationship with him several months ago because she believed he had serious mental health issues which caused him to be violent with her.
