Police Say Young Mother Starved, Abused Young Son In Jealous Rage For Months

(Fayetteville, AR.) – A young Arkansas mother and her boyfriend are now in jail, accused of assaulting the woman's son since at least last November in a jealous rage.

WBTV-TV reported that Melissa Miranda, 33, and Jouse Tovias were arrested last Friday after police said her 8-year-old son had been starved, abused, and handcuffed to furniture at their Fayetteville home, according to NBC affiliate KARK.

The report, based on court documents, said police saw the child with a scabbed injury on his right hand that resembled someone applying pressure to a handcuff while wearing it.

Police say an investigation revealed that Miranda – a pregnant mother of four children aged 5 to 17 - abused the boy because she was jealous that her mother loved the boy more than she loved her.

The TV report said detectives interviewed staff at the boy's school who said the child’s appearance had been changing since November, that his eyes and cheeks had sunken in and his skin tone had changed. In addition, school staffers said the boy had been stealing and hoarding food so the school made the boy his own eating schedule “to accommodate his extreme hunger.”

School employees told police that when they called Miranda and Tovias to help the boy's situation, they became defensive.

All children have all been removed from the home and placed in foster care.
