Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy Shoots, Kills Spanaway Man
March 18, 2018
(ELK PLAIN, WA.) -- The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal shooting of a man Friday night by a Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy in the Elk Plain area of the county.
The incident occurred at 252nd St. E. and Mountain Highway E. in the Elk Plain area. The sheriff's office says at 9:32 p.m. a woman called 911 to report that her male friend was "having a mental breakdown in the middle of road," according to a sheriff's office statement.
During the 911 call the dispatcher suddenly heard screaming and was unable to speak to the caller. When the caller got back on the phone she told the dispatcher that her friend had a knife, then said “Let go of me now!” and stop it!”.
The caller then got back on the phone and told the dispatcher that her friend was now on foot headed eastbound on 252nd St.
As deputies were en route to that location, a second person called 911 to report that a man matching the description of the man said to be having a mental breakdown had just attempted to enter his vehicle.
From the sheriff's office statement:
"The first 911 caller was still on the phone with dispatchers and told them that her friend was trying to “jump into other people’s vehicles”. As the first deputy arrived on scene, the caller told the dispatchers that the suspect was now trying to get into her vehicle. Moments later the deputy radioed in that shots had been fired; the suspect had reportedly refused multiple commands from the deputy at gunpoint, then entered the deputy’s patrol vehicle at which point the deputy fired at the suspect."
The man who was shot died at the scene and is believed to be a 28 year old man from Spanaway, Washington. The deputy was not injured.
Detectives are investigating the incident.
