Officer accidentally shoots himself at Bremerton Police firing range
August 16, 2018
(BREMERTON, WA) – Bremerton Police say a corrections officer accidentally shot himself Wednesday afternoon during live-fire firearms training.
The incident occurred at the Bremerton Police Department’s Firing Range as Kitsap County Jail corrections officers were conducting firearms training at that location on West Belfair Valley Road.
At just a few minutes after 3 pm a “corrections officer accidentally discharged his duty weapon. The corrections officer sustained a non-life threatening injury to his leg and was transported to an area hospital, where he is in stable condition,” said a statement issued by Bremerton PD.
The statement did not say how, in what context, the gun was fired so it was not known if the discharge occurred while the officer was holstering his weapon or perhaps pulling it from a holster as part of “draw and fire” training or if the discharge occurred in some other manner entirely.
The Bremerton Police Department is investigating the incident.
