BREAKING NEWS

Next planned closure of Highway 2 Trestle in Snohomish County
is July 14-15

(SNOHOMISH COUNTY) – This weekend's closure of the westbound US Highway 2 trestle has been postponed due to rain so the next planned closure is scheduled for July 14-15.

The project removes damaged asphalt and repaves both directions of US 2 to keep it in a state of good repair for commuters and commerce, acording to the statetransportaiton department (WSDOT).

Additionally, during weekend closures a thorough inspection of the westbound Hewitt Avenue trestle will be done and repairs made as needed.

Why a weekend of no rain is needed

The waterproof material crews need to put down to prevent rainwater from seeping into the concrete bridge deck and corroding the rebar has to be applied when there is NO rain or moisture AT ALL on the bridge deck

For one of the reasons, the primer used to attach the waterproof coating to the bridge deck won’t stick if there is moisture on the deck. Another is that applying the material when there’s a hint of moisture, then putting hot asphalt on top of the waterproof coating creates steam and that steam can expand and create bubbles or separations between the bridge deck and asphalt which in turncreates a less-than-smooth ride.

Slated closures are 7 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Monday on the following weekends:

  • July 13 – July 16 *

  • July 20 – July 23 *

  • August 3 – August 6*

  • August 10 – August 13

  • August 17 - August 20

  • September 7 - September 10

The detour route for the first four closures (denoted with “*”) reverses traffic on 20th Street Southeast to westbound only. The westbound on-ramps to US 2 from SR 204 and 20th Street Southeast will also be closed.

The final two weekend closures will officially detour via state routes 9, 96 and 528.
